Music Preservation Workshop – ONLINE
June 24-August 2, 2024 / Weekly synchronous classes to be scheduled with students
Online course
Alice Carli, Conservator, Sibley Music Library
This course is available in two formats: a one-week in-person institute and a six-week online workshop. This listing describes the online workshop. For information about the in-person institute, click here.
We’re back – and better than ever! This six-week online course has been developed to allow students to experience state of the art binding and preservation techniques and workflows in their own library, spreading the learning over the summer with the support of Zoom classes, equipment lists, videos, and other useful supplementary materials. Students whose circumstances allow it are also welcome to visit Sibley Library in person to check out materials and equipment firsthand.
The focus of the course is hands-on experience in repair techniques and preservation strategies for musical scores, with particular emphasis on matching preservation decisions to library (or personal) circumstances and mission. A combination of instructional videos made in the Sibley Conservation lab and Zoom conferencing provides demonstrations you can refer to over and over, lectures on administration, workflow organization, digitization, and special materials, and one-on-one questions and answers about dealing with your particular collection and its issues. The price of the course will entitle you to full access to the videos, Zoom conferencing during the length of the course, phone or video consultation when needed afterward, and the option of arranging to visit Sibley to round out your experience!
The course was designed for library professionals and support staff, but private collectors, composers, and music students curious about best practices for binding and preserving scores are also welcome. Students wishing to take this course for 1 credit must email Dr. Sylvie Beaudette at sbeaudette@esm.rochester.edu to register as independent study.

“Alice was friendly and knowledgeable. She was generous with her information and time, and covered a wide range of topics and techniques that could be encountered in music preservation. I have a better understanding of assessing individual items, as well as new skills for item preparation and repair” — 2022 Music Preservation Workshop – ONLINE participant
