Biographical Sketch

Clarence Bilhorn was a prominent music educator and church choir director in Rochester during the 1940’s through 1960’s. He was the music director at East High School and also at different times conducted church choirs at Greece Baptist Church, Lake Avenue Baptist Church, South Avenue Baptist Church, and others. He was educated at the University of Illinois, Bush Conservatory in Chicago, and Columbia University. He also studied at Westminster Choir College and Eastman School.

Unknown, presumably gift of Bilhorn or heirs.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of two scrapbooks containing mainly music inventories and lists of repertoire sung by Bilhorn’s choirs along with a few programs. The material gives some insight into the level of vocal performance in the Rochester secondary schools and in local church choirs.

Associations

Special Collections also holds to photograph albums related to Alfred Spouse, who was director of music for Rochester Schools during much of the same period as Bilhorn.
