Historical Sketch

The Eastman School of Music began operations in 1921 after its construction under the patronage of George Eastman. The School was built for the training of amateur and professional musicians and has provided university degrees as part of the University of Rochester in addition to musical instruction to the Rochester community. Many of the School’s alumni have successfully continued their musical activities as performers, composers, teachers, or conductors after their years at Eastman, and have become major figures in the music world.

 

Provenance

These scrapbooks were gathered in chronological order by year by the Sibley Music Library of the Eastman School of Music.

 

Scope and Content

The collection consists of scrapbooks filled with press clippings from 1956 to 1971 relating to alumni of the Eastman School of Music. The clippings comprise concert announcements, articles on performances and performers, performance reviews, and other general interest stories relating to ESM Alumni. Some clippings relate to students and faculty of the School (i.e. not alumni at the time of publication.)

These scrapbooks are valuable in reference to the following topics (non-comprehensive): the history of the Eastman School of Music, the careers of Eastman graduates, general alumni interest.

There are no restrictions on the use of these scrapbooks.
