Students

We are regularly seeking energetic students to fill a variety of student assistant positions in the Library. We offer the following student employment opportunities:

Searching in DiscoverUR, counting and processing gift items, unmarking withdrawn items, shelving recently received items that are waiting to be cataloged, special projects as assigned.

Circulation Assistants’ primary job is to take care of all patrons courteously and efficiently. Circulation Assistants’ work involves responsibility for routine circulation, shelf maintenance, and clerical functions, using an automated circulation system.

Duties include—

  1. Charging books in and out
  2. Shelving library materials
  3. Shelf-reading
  4. Shelf shifting
  5. Answering Telephones

Provide reference assistance to a variety of clientele in person as well as by phone, chat, and email. Queries range from simple inquires on how to use our online catalog to very detailed and involved reference questions. Other duties as assigned include reference stacks maintenance, catalog researching, computer work, etc.  Typically the assistant is a graduate student who has taken MHS 480: Music Bibliography or the equivalent at another institution.

(a) Receive national and international requests for Sibley items; (b) Respond to Eastman requests for items not in Sibley. Written and spoken communication skills desired.

Check out and re-shelve recordings and reserve materials. Search for materials in DiscoverUR and in the stacks to place on reserve. Answer reserve-related questions.

Processing archival collections; data entry; retrieval of vault materials on request; and photocopying on request. Requires attention to detail and the capacity to remain on task while working independently; care in handling fragile items absolutely required. Familiarity with one or more European languages an advantage.

Internships are occasionally available based on the capacity of Sibley staff to provide a stimulating work experience. Please contact Jonathan Sauceda to inquire.

► Graduate Library Assistantships

Graduate students of all levels, who have experience or interest in library work, may be offered assistantships at the Sibley Music Library. Opportunities may range from public-facing work—assisting patrons at the reference and circulation desks—to higher level tasks and projects, such as processing new titles, organizing archives, and facilitating research in special collections.
