Notes on bowing from Channing Robbin’s studies with Demeterius Dounis (July 1947). From Channing Robbins Collection, Box 1, Folder 1.

Biographical Sketch

Channing Robbins taught cello at Juilliard School of Music and studied with Demeterius Dounis, a cellist well-known for instruction in bowing technique.

Provenance

On the death of Channing Robbins, these materials passed into the hands of his sister, Joyce Robbins, who in turn gave them to her student, Amos Yang. Yang donated them to Sibley Library in 1997.

Scope and Content

The collection includes twenty manuscript leaves of notes taken by Robbins while studying with Dounis during the period 1947-48. The previous owners believed that the manuscript music illustrations are in the hand of Dounis himself. Also included are three items of correspondence between Robbins and Nadia Boulanger.

Restrictions and Use

None.

Associations

Watanabe Special Collections holds manuscripts of two cadenzas for cello concertos attributed to Casals, one possibly in his hand, which it received on a separate occasion through the same connections. The cadenzas are cataloged separately in rare books.
