DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION
Cadenza Collection (material undated, est. 1875-1910)
2″ linear
Location: M1A 3,1
Provenance
This collection was extracted from gifts received by Sibley Music Library over an undetermined period of time, probably extending through the 1960’s and 1970’s. No indication of source of the materials is available. The collection was discovered in the basement of Sibley Library prior to the Library’s move into its new facility in January 1989.
Scope and Content
The collection includes forty-two imprints of cadenzas for violin concertos published predominantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The cadenzas are for many major works in the instrument’s repertoire. The composers of the cadenzas include many first rank and historically important virtuosos of the time. The collection will be particularly useful for the historical study of violin performance practice during the late nineteenth century.
Restrictions and Use
There are no restrictions.
Associations
The library possesses a collection of letters by the violinist Arthur Hartmann, active during the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. Manuscripts of several works dedicated to Hartmann are also in the rare books collection. A finding aid exists for the Hartmann collection. Both Eastman School Archives and Sibley Music Library possess materials relating to the career of Jacques Gordon, a prominent early twentieth-century violinist.
DESCRIPTION OF SERIES
Series 1: Music
The series consists of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century imprints of cadenzas for violin concertos. The concertos mainly include major works in the repertoire, and the composers of the cadenzas include many prominent virtuosos of the time. The series is arranged alphabetically by the name of the composer of the concerto for which the cadenzas were written. A cross index by name of the composer of the cadenzas is provided.
