NOTES
|
Although Puccini substantially
revised La rondine in a second and third
version, he seemed to lose interest in the opera
and instead became absorbed with the completion
of the Trittico. La rondine, beset
by problems of war-time collaborations and
political misunderstandings, has never enjoyed
the success of Puccini's other later operas. La
rondine began as a commission for a Viennese
operetta in German. Following a quarrel with Tito
Ricordi, Giulio's son and successor, Puccini
engaged Adami to recast the German text into an
Italian libretto, and he decided to offer his
first comic opera to Ricordi's Milanese rivals,
Casa Sonzogno. |

La rondine Undated
manuscript
Italian piano and vocal score
This is a manuscript copy that probably
originated from the Casa Sonzogno. The manuscript
is probably in the hand of Carlo Carignani, who
prepared the vocal scores of most of
Puccinis operas, and the emendations in
blue pencil incorporated into the published
vocal scoreare almost certainly
Puccinis.
