DATES AND AUDITION OPTIONS
2025 Rochester Audition Dates: Friday February 7, 14, 21, 28
2025 Remote Audition Option: Applicants who would like to audition virtually should upload the final audition requirements within their application by February 1st.
PRE-SCREENING AND AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Undergraduate
Pre-screening requirement: All undergraduate violin applicants must upload a preliminary audition video recording of the following repertoire before December 1st:
- one movement of a concerto (not a slow movement, accompanied or unaccompanied)
- one movement of solo Bach
BM Final Audition Requirement:
- A movement of a concerto from the standard repertoire by a composer such as Barber, Bruch, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Vieuxtemps, Wieniawski, etc. Prepared repertoire should include either the first or the last movement including cadenza. This selection must be memorized.
- Two contrasting movements from an unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita. This must be memorized.
- An etude from one of the standard etude books, such as those of Kreutzer, Fiorillo, Rode, Dont, Wieniawski, or Paganini.
- Three-octave major and minor scales and arpeggios.
Graduate
Pre-screening requirement: All applicants must upload a preliminary audition recording by December 1st. The prescreening recording must include the following:
- One movement of a concerto (not a slow movement, accompanied or unaccompanied)
- Two movements of solo Bach
- One Paganini caprice or equivalent high-virtuosity piece
Final Audition Requirements:
Applicants for MM:
- A complete concerto from the standard repertoire by a composer such as Barber, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Vieuxtemps, Wieniawski, etc. This selection must be
memorized. - Two contrasting movements from an unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita, one of which must be a fugue or the Chaconne. This must be memorized.
- One Paganini caprice or an equivalent high-virtuosity
piece.
Applicants for DMA:
- A complete concerto from the standard repertoire by a composer such as Barber, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Vieuxtemps, Wieniawski, etc. This selection must be
memorized. - A complete unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita which includes a fugue or the Chaconne. (Sonatas No. 1, 2, 3 or Partita No. 2). This must be memorized.
- A caprice by Paganini, Wieniawski, or Ernst.
- A virtuosic or contemporary piece (under-represented composers encouraged).
