DATES AND AUDITION OPTIONS
2025 Rochester Audition Dates: Fridays February 7, 14, 21, and 28
2025 Virtual Audition Option: Applicants who would like to audition virtually should upload their pre-screening requirements within their application. If approved, finalists will perform their final audition over zoom in February 2025.
PRE-SCREENING AND AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Undergraduate
BM Pre-screening Requirement: All BM Trombone and BM Bass Trombone applicants must upload a pre-screening video containing the following material within their application by December 1st:
- One complete Bordogni/Rochut etude from nos. 1-30 of Book 1
- One complete technical etude from Kopprasch “60 Selected Studies” or Blazhevich “Clef Studies”
- A three minute excerpt from any solo work (piano optional)
Tenor Trombone Final Audition Requirements:
- A solo work by Barat, David, Castèréde, Guilimant, Hindemith or works of similar difficulty
- One etude from Bordogni/Rochut Melodious Etudes 1-24
- One complete technical etude from Kopprasch “60 Selected Studies” or Blazhevich “Clef Studies”
- Orchestral excerpts as appropriate to training and experience
Bass Trombone Final Audition Requirements:
- A solo work; Music of McCarty, Lebedev, Ritter George or works of similar difficulty
- One etude from Bordogni/Rochut Melodious Etudes 1-24 (as written and 8vb)
- One complete technical etude from Kopprasch (Fote) “60 Selected Studies” or Blazhevich (Vernon) “Clef Studies”
- Orchestral excerpts as appropriate to training and experience
Applicants in jazz studies and contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz for their requirements.
Graduate
MM: Pre-screening Requirement: All MM Trombone and MM Bass Trombone candidates must upload a pre-screening video containing the following material within their application by December 1st:
- One complete Bordogni/Rochut etude from nos. 31-60 of Book 1
- One complete technical etude from Bitsch “15 Rhythmical Studies” or Tyrell “40 Progressive Etudes”
- A three minute excerpt from any solo work (piano optional)
- Two contrasting orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire
DMA: Pre-Screening Requirement: All DMA Trombone and DMA Bass Trombone candidates must upload a 30-minute pre-screening video containing the following material within their application by December 1st:
- 2 contrasting solo movements/works (1 from the standard repertoire and 1 transcription) (15 minutes)
- A short example of the applicant’s proficiency on a doubling instrument or genre such as alto trombone,
tenor trombone, bass trombone, tuba, or jazz improvisation (5 minutes) - A short demonstration of the applicant’s one-on-one teaching ability (10 minutes)
MM and DMA Trombone and Bass Trombone Final Audition Requirements:
- 1 lyrical etude (such as, but not limited to, Bordogni, Panofka, Busser, etc.)
- 1 technical etude (such as, but not limited to, Bitsch, Tyrell, Bozza, etc.)
- 1 baroque, classical, or romantic transcription
- 1 complete, major work (concerto, sonata, etc.) originally composed for the instrument
- 3 contrasting orchestral excerpts as appropriate to training and experience
- Possible sight-reading demanding proficiency in bass, tenor, and alto clefs
