STUDENT PROFILE
Australian pianist William Shi has garnered first prizes at numerous competitions including the Petrof, Vivace/Yamaha, and Queensland Piano Competitions. He has appeared at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and the Australian Piano Duo Festival. William is a recipient of the Theme & Variations Foundation Award, an American Australian Association Arts Fund Grant and since 2021, has been supported by the Australian Music Foundation. In 2023 he was the inaugural winner of the AMF Richard Bonynge Award.
As a collaborative pianist, William has accompanied masterclasses with such distinguished artists as Glenn Dicterow, Walter Auer, Martin Katz, Dawn Upshaw, and Renée Fleming, and has worked with the Szymanowski International Violin Competition, Australasian Double Reed Society National Competition, and the Underground Opera Company. Since entering the Accompanying and Chamber Music Program, William has been accepted into the 2023 and 2024 Tanglewood Music Center Instrumental and Vocal Collaborative Piano Programs, the 2023 Aspen Music Festival and School Collaborative Piano Program (Vocal Fellowship), the 2022 Aspen Music Festival and School Collaborative Piano Program (Instrumental Collaboration), and the 2022 Music Academy of the West Collaborative Piano Program (Instrumental Collaboration). His U.S performances have been broadcast on WXXI Classical and Performance Today.
William holds degrees from the Mannes School of Music and the University of Queensland, studying with Dr. Arkady Aronov and Max Olding. At Eastman, William is the teaching assistant for Dr. Ran Dank with whom he is currently undertaking a DMA in Piano Performance & Literature, alongside an MM in Piano Accompanying & Chamber Music with Dr. Andrew Harley. He serves as Adjunct Faculty at Nazareth University.
