2025 Rochester Audition Dates: Fridays, February 7, 14, and 21
PRE-SCREENING AND AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Undergraduate
Pre-screening requirement: By December 1, all saxophone applicants must upload a pre-screen video recording following the repertoire guidelines below. If approved from pre-screening, the audition should also follow the same repertoire guidelines, and can present the same or different material.
Applicants who are selected to audition on the basis of their prescreen-recordings will be scheduled for an audition, which will include sight-reading and aural skills assessment with faculty. Applicants who select a remote audition should follow the same repertoire guidelines, and will complete their audition, sight-reading and an aural assessment via Zoom.
Examples of recommended repertoire:
- Any concerto or sonata from the standard repertoire, such as Creston, Desenclos, Glazunov, Ibert, or equivalent
- Two etudes of contrasting tempo, such as Voxman, Ferling, or Karg-Elert
Applicants in jazz studies and contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz for their requirements.
Graduate

MM Saxophone audition requirements: Prepared repertoire should include three complete works representing contrasting styles from standard and contemporary solo literature appropriate to training and experience.
DMA Saxophone audition requirements: Prepared repertoire should include four complete works representing contrasting styles. Applicants are encouraged to include one transcription of a work written before the 20th century, as well as a contemporary work requiring the extensive use of extended techniques.
Advanced Diploma in Performance applicants should follow the repertoire guidelines above. Advanced Diploma applicants who are applying after a bachelor’s degree should follow the MM requirements, and those who are applying following a master’s degree should follow the DMA requirements.
