STUDENT PROFILE
Anthony LaLena holds a B.M. from The State University of New York at Fredonia, an M.M. from the Manhattan School of Music, and a DMA from the Eastman School of Music in classical guitar performance with a minor in historical performance practice. His research explores the intersections of modernist music and politics in Spain, France, and Latin America. His dissertation, “Decentering Spanish Music in the Theatrical Works of Manuel de Falla,” examines how Falla’s music contributed to shifting international perceptions of Spanish identity in the twentieth century through the modernist aesthetics of failure, fragmentation, and puppetry, especially as they concern staged performances of race and gender. Recently, Anthony has presented his work at the American Musicological Society, the Northeast Modern Language Association, and the Guitar Foundation of America. His doctoral work has been awarded the Jerald C. Graue Fellowship for excellence in musicology and the Glenn Watkins Traveling Fellowship. His dissertation is currently supported by the Elsa T. Johnson Fellowship.
