Nathan Howton
STUDENT PROFILE
Nathan Howton is a french hornist from Dallas, Texas. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Horn Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music, studying with W. Peter Kurau. In his time in Rochester, NY, he has performed with various ensembles including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman Philharmonia, the acclaimed Eastman Wind Ensemble, and the Eastman Harmonie. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas where he studied with Dr. Stacie Mickens and Haley Hoops. During his undergraduate studies, he played with groups such as the North Texas Symphony Orchestra and the world-renowned North Texas Wind Symphony.
Throughout Nathan’s academic career, he has had the privilege of recording with several different ensembles. He can be heard in the horn section with the North Texas Wind Symphony on their albums Closure (2022) and Respair (2022), which was recently nominated for a Latin Grammy for the piece, “Caribbean Berceuse” by Paquito de Rivera, under the direction of Eugene Migliaro Corporon. Most recently, he can be heard playing Solo Horn with the Imanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival on their recording of Anton Bruckner’s Psalm 146 (2024) under the direction of Franz Anton Krager.
Outside of music, Nathan can be found crocheting, hiking, baking, and cooking with friends and family.
