Q&A with ESM Tuba Professor Justin Benavidez
By Reginald Bowens, Marketing Assistant for Summer@Eastman
Greetings, Friends! In preparation for Summer@Eastman 2024, I had the privilege of speaking with Eastman’s new Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium, Dr. Justin Benavidez, about the Eastman Summer Tuba & Euphonium Institute. Here’s what he had to say:
What kind of experience should participants expect while attending the institute?
Every participant will have fun, learn about becoming a more convincing performer, and make connections with peers that we hope will last a lifetime! The institute will include opportunities to learn fundamentals in a group setting, to perform in a masterclass, to receive a lesson with faculty members, and to play chamber music. There will also be a panel discussion on career-building, a mock audition, a participant recital, and a participant chamber music concert. We hope that every participant will have a long-lasting and memorable experience.
Who should apply? What are you looking for in applicants?
Any current undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate students can apply. We are looking for applicants that are enthusiastically seeking to improve their performance skills in an engaging summer experience. All performance levels are encouraged to apply.
What is the culminating event of the institute?
We will conclude the institute with a participant chamber music concert that features both small and large chamber ensembles directed by faculty. This will be a wonderful way to present the musical learning and camaraderie of the week together.
What do you look forward to the most in your institute?
I am most excited to meet and work with the participants at the start of the week. The eagerness in those first moments is always palpable and tells me how much fun we will have in our days together.
