The Eastman Viola Workshop – created by Eastman alumna Katie Dey (faculty, South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities) and Eastman faculty George Taylor – returns to Summer@Eastman in 2023. We’re delighted to welcome violists back to campus this summer!
This weeklong workshop is designed as an “advanced basics” course, encouraging students to explore and refine the art and craft of viola playing. Summer@Eastman’s Marketing Assistant Joyce Tseng talked with Katie Dey to find out more about the program.
JT: What are the objectives and focus of the Eastman Viola Workshop?
KD: Our goal is to help violists at the pre-college, collegiate, and professional levels refine their technical skill set and deepen their musical expression. Our approach is comprehensive and process-oriented and takes place within a supportive group setting.
JT: Who should apply to this workshop?
KD: Any high school, college, or professional violist who is interested in exploring viola playing.
JT: What is a sample day like at the workshop?
KD: Each day is very busy and filled with a variety of activities! We start with yoga first thing in the morning, followed by group classes and individual sessions every day.
JT: What repertoire should they prepare?
KD: We ask everyone to bring two pieces of repertoire they are fairly comfortable with to present at the final masterclass.
JT: What unique opportunities will be offered at the Eastman Viola Workshop?
KD: All participants will have the unique opportunity to explore spiccato by throwing an old viola bow on the floor (not a typical teaching practice!) as well as by bouncing a ball. The Workshop also includes voice and movement sessions, in addition to individual lessons and masterclasses.
JT: What is your teaching philosophy?
KD: It is beautiful to learn from each other as we bravely and patiently learn about ourselves!
