Darren Mueller appointed to Musicology Department at the Eastman School of Music
Rochester, NY – The Eastman School of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of Darren Mueller to the position of assistant professor of musicology starting in the fall semester of 2016-17. Darren has taught music history and music literature as a visiting faculty member at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His scholarship on the jazz industry’s adoption of the long-playing record was published in Jazz Perspectives in 2014. With additional research interests in sound and digital media, he is a co-editor of the web collection Provoke! Digital Sound Studies and the companion print volume, currently under contract at Duke University Press.
Dr. Roger Freitas, Chair and Associate Professor of Musicology at Eastman said “We look forward to Darren’s joining us in the Musicology Department. To the already wide-ranging interests of our faculty, he will bring special expertise in jazz history and media studies. We’re certain he will collaborate regularly with the Department of Jazz and Contemporary Media and contribute to the School’s new initiatives in media and film composition.”
Darren Mueller holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Duke University; a Master of Arts in jazz history and research from Rutgers University in Newark, N.J.; and a Bachelor of Music in saxophone performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He performs professionally as a saxophonist in the Southeast.
According to Dr. Mueller, “Eastman has long been known for its rich musical and intellectual traditions. I’m thrilled to be joining the faculty and look forward to beginning my career at Eastman in the fall.”
