Korean musician Jang Hyun Won, a legendary performer on the daegum, or traditional Korean wooden flute, will be in residence at the Eastman School of Music Thursday, Sept. 18.
Won will give a class about daegum and Korean traditional music from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18,in the Ciminelli Formal Lounge located in the Eastman Student Living Center, 100 Gibbs St. Won will also perform an evening solo recital at 7 p.m. in Room One of Messinger Hall, 10 Gibbs St.
Won is considered one of the Grand Masters of the daegum flute, having devoted his life to promoting the traditional music of Korea. He has won grand prizes in numerous competitions including the Korean Broadcasting System Traditional Orchestra Competition, and has been principal daegum player in the National Traditional Instrument Orchestra of Korea. He is also the president of the GumHyun Traditional Art Center located in Seoul, South Korea.
The events, sponsored by the Eastman School of Music and the Eastman Community Music School, are free and open to the public.
