This year’s recipient of an annual scholarship awarded by the Rochester, New York Chapter, The Links, Incorporated, to an Eastman School of Music student will present a recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 17, in the School’s Kilbourn Hall.
Alex Gonzalez, a violinist in the studio of Professor Oleh Krysa, received the award, which is a cooperative effort between the Rochester, New York Chapter, The Links, Incorporated, and the Eastman School to recognize and celebrate extraordinary talent and academic achievement of an African American scholar musician.
The Links, Inc., is an international organization linking African American women committed to educational, cultural, and civic activities on issues of human rights and justice. The Rochester, New York Chapter, the Links, Inc. was established in 1984 and supports programs in the arts, services to youth, national trends and services, and international trends and services.
Gonzalez will present a recital featuring a range of music. He will be joined by pianist Tatiana Tchekina for Beethoven’s Sonata No. 8 in G Major, Op. 30, De Falla’s “Danse Espagnole” from La Vida Breve, and Wieniawski’s Polonaise Brilliante. Op. 21. For the second half of the program, Gonzalez will perform Dvorak’s Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90, “Dumky,” with cellist Jamie Clark and pianist Luiz Ortiz.
A junior, Gonzalez has been concertmaster of the Las Vegas Youth Philharmonic, Las Vegas Youth Symphony, Las Vegas Academy orchestras, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra. He has made solo appearances with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Henderson Symphony, and Las Vegas Academy Orchestra as winner of their concerto competitions. Gonzalez has participated in numerous master classes, including with William Preucil, Pamela Frank, and members of the Pacifica, Cavani, and Ying quartets.
