Acclaimed Norwegian organist Jon Laukvik will present a recital on the Craighead-Saunders Organ in Christ Church (Episcopal) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27.
In 1977, Laukvik was awarded both the First Prize and the Bach Prize in the International Organ Competition in Nuremberg. The same year, he was also a prize winner in the International Organ Competition sponsored by the Assembly of the German Protestant Church in Berlin.
Laukvik has toured throughout Europe, Japan, Korea, Israel, and the United States, and he is also in demand to serve on competition juries and to teach seminars and master classes. He has numerous recordings and publications, including the organ tutor Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing, to his credit. His compositions include works for solo organ, organ with other instruments, and vocal and instrumental works.
Laukvik is the first guest artist to present a guest recital on the Craighead-Saunders Organ since it was inaugurated last fall. The organ replicates a historic 18th century instrument in Lithuania and is the result of a decade-long international research and construction collaboration. Laukvik’s program will include works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Christian Kittel, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, and other composers.
Admission to the recital is $10; $5 for full-time students; and free for members of the Rochester Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Tickets are available at the door one hour before the concert, cash or check only. For more information, call 585-274-1450.
Laukvik’s recital is presented by the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
