A new series of monthly recitals featuring vocal and instrumental performance majors from the Eastman School of Music starts this month in the stunning and historic St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church.
The first concert in the “Eastman at St. Michael’s Series” will be presented at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, and features harpist Hillary Schefter. Schefter will be joined by cellist Michael Kaufman and flutist Haley Bangs for a portion of the program. Performances will continue through the spring at the same time on the fourth Sunday of each month; the schedule includes soprano Erica Washburn and organist Christopher Petit on Feb. 22; members of the Eastman School’s Collegium Musicum with organist Mark Edwards on March 22; Voices, a vocal ensemble directed by Eastman Professor William Weinert, on April 26; and trumpeter William Osinski and organist Daniel Aune on May 24.
Each concert will be followed by a reception and by the 4 p.m. Mass.
Concerts are free and open to the public. Donations can be directed to the church.
The recital series is a collaboration between the Eastman School and St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church. Located at 869 North Clinton Ave. in Rochester, St. Michael’s is an 1888 Gothic Revival church that was designed by prominent Chicago architect Adolphus Druiding. The Lockport sandstone exterior features a 225-foot tower, a prominent visual landmark on the city’s northeast side. The interior, which is highlighted by stenciled walls, carvings of oak and gold leaf, and Austrian stained glass windows, is considered one of the most beautiful in the area.
