German baritone Christian Gerhaher, a young singer who has been favorably compared to the giants of lieder singing, will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, as part of the Kilbourn Concert Series at the Eastman School of Music. Accompanied by piano partner Gerold Huber, the singer will present a program that traverses 150 years of German art songs, ranging from works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Mahler to a work written by Czech-born Jewish composer Pavel Haas shortly before his death in a concentration camp.
Gerhaher attended the Opera School of the Hochschule für Musik in Munich. He also studied philosophy and medicine in Munich and Rome. He continued perfecting his vocal training after completing his medical studies.
Gerhaher and Huber have performed in such major venues as Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Cologne and Berlin Philharmonie. In addition to his extensive concert and recital schedule, Gerhaher performs in select opera productions. He sang the title role in Monteverdi’s Orfeo as well as Wolfram in Wagner’s Tannhauser, both at the Frankfurt Opera. Under Riccardo Muti, he was Papageno in a production of The Magic Flute at the Salzburg Festival in 2006.
Recordings by Gerhaher and Huber have been highly acclaimed; their Schubert album Abenbilder received the Gramophone Award in 2006 for best solo vocal recording. The same year, Gerhaher was awarded the NDR Music Prize. The duo’s most recent album, a collection of Schumann songs titled Melancholie, has received extensive critical praise.
