Approximately 150 Eastman School of Music students will fan out into the community this month, presenting interactive concerts to audiences ranging from school children to nursing home residents. The events are part of the School’s “Music for All” initiative, a chamber music program designed to take classical music out of concert halls and bring it directly to the public.
In preparation for the more than 70 programs that will be presented in schools, libraries, churches, nursing homes, and other locations, the Eastman students developed two performances: one for a school-aged audience and one for adults. The musical events, some of which are open to the public (see below), will take place between March 25 and April 15.
“Music for All” is a curricular requirement for Eastman brass, harp, piano, string, and wind chamber music groups, designed to teach students the skills necessary to bring music to audiences in the community. Eastman is currently the only collegiate school of music to have such an extensive outreach program as an integral part of its chamber music curriculum.
Eastman students have been developing and fine-tuning their concert presentations since January, when they observed an established professional chamber music group perform an educational program for a group of children. In the ensuing weeks, the Eastman musicians worked with faculty to prepare their own programs and present a dress rehearsal for a faculty member and other students.
In addition to several dozen private performances, the following “Music for All” events are free and open to the public:
