Rochester, N.Y—Eastman presents two days of back-to-back concerts featuring the music of one of today’s most prominent and exciting New York composers, David Lang. The first concert, which takes place on Sunday, February 11 at 8 p.m. at the Bop Shop in Village Gate Square, features the new music ensemble, Electric Fuzz. The following evening, Monday February 12, Eastman’s Musica Nova ensemble will perform an 8 p.m. concert in Kilbourn Hall, with members of Electric Fuzz assisting. Both concerts, free and open to the public, will be led by Brad Lubman, Associate Professor of Conducting and Ensembles at Eastman.
David Lang, whose music pulls influence from minimalism, modernism, and rock, is a major force in today’s evolving contemporary music scene. Along with Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon, Lang co-founded Bang on a Can, an organization of such significance that it has been called by The San Fransisco Chronicle, “the country’s most important vehicle for contemporary music.”
Both concerts will feature pieces that cut across pre-constructed boundaries. Other works to be performed include pieces by Arvo Part, Helmut Lachenmann, Michael Gordon, Paul Coleman, Lauren Radnofsky, and Lubman.
Electric Fuzz, an ensemble composed of professional musicians in Rochester from eclectic musical backgrounds, made its premiere performances in Rochester and New York City in the fall of 2006. The ensemble aims to create new artistic synergies by juxtaposing musical elements that would not normally be found together: acoustic music and electronic music, pop-art and avant-garde, etc. The group is co-directed by Lubman, a composer, conductor, and performer who has played a vital role in the world of modern music for more than two decades, and by cellist Lauren Radnofsky.
