ROCHESTER, NY — The Eastman School of Music’s concert halls will ring with the music of many countries and a host of outstanding artists for an exciting six weeks of summer concerts, beginning June 26 and continuing through August 5. The School will present approximately 50 concerts and performances as part of its annual Summer Session. This year’s featured performers include members of Eastman’s collegiate faculty, special guest artists, and summer program participants.
A complete, up-to-date concert schedule is included below and also available at www.esm.rochester.edu/concerts/calendar.php. Most concerts are in Kilbourn Hall (unless otherwise noted) and begin at 7:30 p.m. All are open to the public, and most are free. Tickets for concerts that require paid admission are available at the RPO Box office, 108 East Avenue, (585-454-2100); online at www.esm.rochester.edu/concerts, and at the Eastman Ticket Office in the School’s Main Hall at 26 Gibbs Street on the day of the concert from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Any unsold seats go on sale one hour before concert time at the respective hall box office. For up-to-date program information, please call the School’s 24-hour MusicLine at 274-1100.
The highlights of the summer include a performance on July 22 at 7:30 p.m. by the Canadian Brass – who will be returning to the Eastman Theatre for the fifth consecutive year – and the tenth annual Young Artists International Piano Competition during the first week in August, in which piano prodigies from around the world come to Rochester to compete for Eastman scholarships.
Eastman has something for everyone this season. Below are highlights from our summer lineup.
Classical Concerts
Some of Eastman’s greatest musical talent will come out to play throughout the Eastman campus this summer. Performances will be given by faculty trombonists Mark Salatino (July 16) and Mark Kellogg (July 30), guest harpist Ray Pool (July 10), guest pianist Boris Kraljevic (July 30), and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra flutist Jan Angus and harpist Grace Wong (July 24), among others. Organ lovers can hear Italian Baroque Organ installed at the Memorial Art Gallery last summer, every Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m.
Jazz Concerts
The Rochester International Jazz Festival maybe over, but that doesn’t mean that cool tunes and fatty beats have left Gibbs Street for good this summer. Faculty members Dave Rivello (June 26), Paul Hofmann (July 1), Harold Danko (July 5), and Bob Sneider (July 6), and participants in the Summer Jazz Studies program (July 6-7) will all perform in Kilbourn Hall.
World Music Concerts
Mitzie Collins will return to Kilbourn Hall on July 19 for her annual, and always popular, concert of music from around the world. Rochester concert-goers will get the unique opportunity to experience Arabic music first hand at “Arabic Music, Past and Present” on July 13. Additionally, the beautiful sounds of Bali will resonate in Rochester on July 10 for a special Balinese Gamelan concert in Ciminelli Formal Lounge, 100 Gibbs Street.
Other Great Concerts and Events
Eastman will be presenting several concerts associated with the Eastman Community Music School, as well as its many summer courses and institutes. Most notably, performances will be given by participants in the Music Horizons program (July 27-28), the Eastman Sings! program (July 28) and the Organ IMPROVFest (August 2-4). Those who were touched by the life of former Eastman Community Music School faculty member Anastasia Jempelis can remember her life and contributions in a special tribute concert on July 26. And finally, vocalists of all abilities will have the chance to sing through choral masterworks during four choral read-throughs on June 27, July 11, July 21, and July 25 – all of which are open to public participation.
