ROCHESTER, NY Swedish composer and pianist Lars Jansson will perform a concert of his original music with the Eastman School of Musics New Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m., Saturday, November 18, in Kilbourn Hall (26 Gibbs St.). The concert is free and open to the public.
Jansson is a faculty member of the Royal Academy of Music in Gothenburg, where he bases his performing and teaching career. He has recorded two CDs with the Bohuslan Big Band and has appeared on numerous recordings. He has performed throughout Europe and the United States with jazz luminaries Bob Brookmeyer, Thad Jones, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, George Russel, Niels Henning Orstedt-Pedersen, Maria Schneider, and many others. He also has been a regular member of the Jan Garbarek Group, Red Mitchell Trio, and the Albert Heath Quartet.
Janssons CD One Poem, One Painting has received high acclaim. In a review on allaboutjazz.com, Jack Bowers writes that "what is conspicuous from the outset is that within the framework of modern big-band jazz, Jansson writes spellbinding musical poetry and sketches luminous portraits in sounds. Janssons music, always rhythmic and melodious, swings at any and all tempos."
The New Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jim Doser, will perform selections from this CD, as well as other music written by Jansson. The composer also will be featured on piano.
