ROCHESTER, NY – The three winners of the Eastman School of Music’s annual Concerto Competition, held in January, will be showcased in a free concert with the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m., Friday, March 3, in the Eastman Theatre (60 Gibbs St.). David Gilbert will guest conduct.
Pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout, an undergraduate from Dundee, South Africa, and student of Professor Rebecca Penneys, will be the featured soloist in Mozart’s Concerto in D Minor, K. 466. Master’s candidate and Illinois native Peter Kolkay, a bassoonist from the studio of Professor John Hunt, will solo in Gotkovsky’s Variations Concertantes for Bassoon. The third work on the program, Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, will feature Armenian violinist Tigran Vardanian, an undergraduate who studies with Professors Zvi Zeitlin and Oleh Krysa.
In addition to these soloists, the competition judges also selected master’s candidate Alexandra Nguyen as best accompanist. She, however, will not appear in concert.
