Amy Likar

Amy Likar is a member of the Oakland East Bay Symphony. As a freelance flutist, Dr. Likar has performed with the Berkeley Symphony, Festival Opera and for the Oakland Ballet, as well as in numerous chamber music venues.

Dr. Likar holds Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from The Ohio State University and a Bachelor's in Music Education and Flute Performance from Kent State University. She has also studied at the Conservatoire National de Nice, France. Her flute teachers include Martha Aarons and Katherine Borst Jones. Dr. Likar has taught at The Ohio State University and Ashland University.

Amy Likar has studied the Alexander Technique for over 16 years and received her AmSAT certification and training from the Alexander Training Institute of San Francisco in 2002. As a certified Andover Educator, Dr. Likar has presented "What Every Musician Needs to Know About the Body" at The Ohio State University, Ashland University, Youngstown State University, The University of Akron, Kent State University, the Juilliard School, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and other venues across the US and Europe.

Dr. Likar has presented at numerous conferences including National Flute Association Conventions, Performing Arts Medicine Association Symposiums, and a MTNA Conference.

My college friend and ROPA colleague, Sherill Roberts, has been telling me about Barbara Conable for many years. Sherill is a cellist who had to overcome some pretty serious health issues in her past, and thus she is particularly attuned to the needs of her body in terms of movement. She recently became certified to teach the Andover Educator Body Mapping course, and suggested that I contact Amy Likar, who has taken over as the group leader now that Barbara Conable has semi-retired.

Henry Fogel

[b]Henry Fogel[/b] was appointed to the position of President and CEO of the American Symphony Orchestra League in July, 2003. Prior to that, he was President of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association for eighteen years, and was Chairman of the Board of the American Symphony Orchestra League from 2001-2003.

He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Avery Fisher Artist Program, and the Board of the College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. He teaches a course in orchestral studies at Roosevelt University in Chicago. He is a record reviewer for Fanfare magazine, and has contributed to the book Contemporary Composers, and to The Harvard Dictionary of Music. Fogel served as Executive Director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. from 1981 to 1985, and Orchestra Manager of the New York Philharmonic from 1978 to1981.

Fogel has received honorary doctorate degrees from Northwestern University, the Curtis Institute of Music, Columbia College in Chicago, and Roosevelt University in Chicago. In 1999, Fogel received a Cultural Leadership Citation from Yale University's School of Music for service to the cultural life of the nation. He has been named by Business Week magazine as one of the five best managers of cultural organizations in the United States.

Henry Fogel stepped down as President of the League of American Orchestras at the end of June, 2008, though he will continue consulting with the League about fundraising and will continue visiting orchestras around the country. Henry has years of experience in the orchestra world, and he graciously agreed to hold a session for musicians at the June conference, where he explained the structure of orchestras, and how smaller orchestras differ from larger ones. As always, his presentation was witty, laced with many stories, but also enormously interesting and educational. If you don\’t really understand what all those people on your staff are doing, read on. And even if you do, read on anyway!

Ann Drinan

Ann Drinan, Senior Editor, has been a member of the Hartford Symphony viola section for over 30 years. She is a former Chair of the Orchestra Committee, former member of the HSO Board, and has served on many HSO committees. She is also the Executive Director of CONCORA (CT Choral Artists), a professional chorus based in Hartford and New Britain, founded by Artistic Director Richard Coffey. Ann was a member of the Advisory Board of the Symphony Orchestra Institute (SOI), and was the HSO ROPA delegate for 14 years, serving as both Vice President and President of ROPA. In addition to playing the viola and running CONCORA, Ann is a professional writer and editor, and has worked as a consultant and technical writer for software companies in a wide variety of industries for over 3 decades. (She worked for the Yale Computer Science Department in the late 70s, and thus has been on the Internet, then called the DARPAnet, since 1977!) She is married to Algis Kaupas, a sound recordist, and lives a block from Long Island Sound in Branford CT. Together they create websites for musicians: shortbeachwebdesign.com.

Ann holds a BA in Music from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and an MA in International Relations from Yale University.

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra recently spent 2 days filming a scene for Robert DeNiro’s new movie, Everybody’s Fine, at Woolsey Hall in New Haven on June 3 & 4. They needed a few extra players, so I commenced my film career by pretending to be a violist. (Hey, I do that in real life!) Jeen Fedelich has toured with most of the major orchestras over the last 25 years including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony, and numerous others. She is one of the most highly-respected tour directors in the field. She speaks fluent English, French, and Spanish, as well as basic Portuguese. French born, Jeen tours exclusively for Classical Movements 150 days each year. Jeen has a fine collection of art and books and is an expert on herbal medicines.

Recently (March 2008) there was an article on Orchestra-L about the London Symphony having to play a concert of Mahler 7th in Dijon using borrowed instruments because their truck was held up due to a strike. My first thought was, “Where was Jeen Fedelich?” Jeen is legendary in the orchestra tour business; she’s been handling impossible problems for nearly 30 years. She currently works for Classical Movements, a tour operator based in Alexandria, VA. I emailed her immediately, but she said she had not been traveling with London when their disaster happened. I hope you’ll enjoy my interview with her about her demanding job that’s so important to traveling orchestras!
