Dr. William Mesa is Associate Professor of Management and Accounting for the School of Business and Leadership at Colorado Christian University. As a member of the faculty since 2004, Dr. Mesa has made his presence known through involvement with students at all levels in the School of Business and Leadership and also through mentoring students outside of the classroom.

His primary research interests are in strategic management and organizational behavior. He has developed papers and presentations on strategy and organizational behavior for a variety of conferences and publications including several reviews in The Journal of Consumer Marketing and the Journal of Brand Management. He recently conducted an exploratory study on the behavioral characteristics of community orchestras with the aim of improving the alignment between resources and musician participation.

His interest in international academics and leadership has been reflected through faculty posts and involvement with various institutions in Asia. Dr. Mesa has served as a guest lecturer and foreign expert in organizational strategy for such entities as Chongqing University, Dalian University of Technology, and Sichuan Institute of Management and Economics. He also has provided guidance and instruction on Chinese culture and economics to students while conducting seminars in the People's Republic of China.

Dr. Mesa remains involved in the Denver-Metro community as a percussionist for the Littleton Symphony Orchestra and is also active in the Mile High Fencing Club, Sun Do Sul Martial Arts, and the "Dead Prophets Society"-a discussion group of faith and culture. Living in Colorado, he enjoys many outdoor pursuits such as backpacking, bicycling, and cross country running.

He received both his B.A. (1990) and M.A. (1992) in Accountancy from New Mexico State University and his Doctor of Management degree from Colorado Technical University in Colorado Springs.

Ann Drinan, Senior Editor, has been a member of the Hartford Symphony viola section for over 30 years. She is a former Chair of the Orchestra Committee, former member of the HSO Board, and has served on many HSO committees. She is also the Executive Director of CONCORA (CT Choral Artists), a professional chorus based in Hartford and New Britain, founded by Artistic Director Richard Coffey. Ann was a member of the Advisory Board of the Symphony Orchestra Institute (SOI), and was the HSO ROPA delegate for 14 years, serving as both Vice President and President of ROPA. In addition to playing the viola and running CONCORA, Ann is a professional writer and editor, and has worked as a consultant and technical writer for software companies in a wide variety of industries for over 3 decades. (She worked for the Yale Computer Science Department in the late 70s, and thus has been on the Internet, then called the DARPAnet, since 1977!) She is married to Algis Kaupas, a sound recordist, and lives a block from Long Island Sound in Branford CT. Together they create websites for musicians: shortbeachwebdesign.com.

Ann holds a BA in Music from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and an MA in International Relations from Yale University.

Cellist Kirsten Jermé, a native of Wisconsin, received her B.A. in 2007 from Stony Brook University, where she studied with Colin Carr and the Emerson String Quartet. Dedicated to linking arts to community and social causes, Kirsten co-directed the annual Music for Peace Festival at Stony Brook and helped launch an Outreach Program through the Staller Center for the Arts. While pursuing her diverse musical interests as a freelance cellist in New York City, she worked for Turtle Bay Music School and The Learning Maestros. She has interned with Musicians for Harmony, Cedar Cultural Center of Minneapolis and Milwaukee Symphony's Arts in Community Education Program, mentored inner-city youth and coached chamber music through a string quartet residency. Kirsten is currently pursuing a Master's Degree at Eastman School of Music, studying with Steven Doane.

Violinist Charles Rex was born into a musical family in Winter Park, Florida, where his father was a composer and instructor at Rollins College and his mother taught piano. He started his violin studies at age four under Alphonse Carlo, professor of violin at Rollins. Following his debut with the Florida Symphony at age thirteen, Mr. Rex won the Hinda Honigmann Scholarship Award to the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina and toured as soloist with the BMC Orchestra throughout North and South Carolina.

Mr. Rex was awarded a full scholarship to Florida State University, where he studied with Richard Burgin, former Concertmaster and Associate Conductor of the Boston Symphony. Other teachers included Jascha Brodsky and Berl Senofsky. During this time, he won the string division of the MTNA National Young Artists Competition and soloed with the Cincinnati Symphony under Max Rudolf.

Immediately after graduating cum laude from FSU with Bachelor and Master of Music degrees, Mr. Rex joined the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy where he played for eight years before accepting the position of Associate Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. He relinquished the position in 1999 due to an increasing demand of his time for solo appearances and recordings. Mr. Rex has also served as guest concertmaster of the London Symphony under Sir Colin Davis and also acted as concertmaster of the Dallas, Reading and Delaware Symphonies. He is also the concertmaster of the Endless Mountain Music Festival in upper Pennsylvania.

In 1982, Florida State University honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus, and the FSU School of Music presented him with the Ernst von Dohnanyi Faculty Citation for Excellence in Performance. In 1988, he toured Egypt and Jordan as soloist with the Princeton Chamber Orchestra and was the first American to appear as soloist in the new Cairo Opera House. The Borough of Staten Island of New York City also made March 13 of that year "Charles Rex Day" on the occasion of a special recital he performed there on behalf of the New York Philharmonic.

At Lincoln Center, Mr. Rex has been soloist with the New York Philharmonic in performances of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," the Hindemith Concerto and the Nielsen Concerto to great critical acclaim, and he also gave the New York premiere of the Harbison Violin Concerto and the world premiere of Gunther Schuller's "Concerto Quaternio." He performed the Bach Double Concerto on a Philharmonic tour of Japan, India, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. He has also given other significant world premieres, including American composer David Ott’s Violin Concerto commissioned by the Reading Symphony and Stephen Paulus’s Concerto for Violin and Cello, a New York Philharmonic commission in conjunction with the Atlanta Symphony performed with his brother, Christopher Rex, principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony. Other solo appearances have included performances with the Atlanta Symphony, the Charlotte Symphony, the Tucson Symphony, the Milwaukee Symphony, the Denver Chamber Orchestra, the Charleston and Florida Symphonies, the Manhattan Philharmonic, the Queens Philharmonic, and the Transylvania, Reading, and Northwest Indiana Symphonies.

A feature-length documentary, [i]Concerto for Two Brothers[/i], by Cristina Cassidy Productions on the Rex brothers’ musical careers and the influence of their composer father, Charles Gordon Rex, on their work is to be released soon at film festivals and on television. Charles and Christopher Rex are also featured as soloists on an Elysium label release of Saint-Saens "The Muse and the Poet" for violin, cello and orchestra, accompanied by the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic of the Czech Republic under Peter Tiboris. Other recordings by Charles Rex include the Copland Piano Quartet for EMI and the world premiere recording for Opus One label of the "Rhapsody for Violin and Orchestra" written by the American composer, Mary Jeanne van Appledorn, and accompanied by the Polish National Radio Orchestra under Joel Suben.

Mr. Rex plays on a violin made by J. B. Guadagnini in 1740 known as the “Ex-Hill” and formally owned by theremin virtuosa Clara Rockmore.

A faculty member of The Juilliard School and a Senior Teaching Artist at the New York Philharmonic, Dr. David Wallace has been broadcast as a soloist on National Public Radio, CBS and ABC television, WQXR radio's McGraw-Hill Young Artist's Showcase, and the international gospel music radio show Live from the Lamb’s. David’s concert appearances include performances with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New York premiere of Stefano Gervasoni's Viola Concerto in Alice Tully Hall, a 20-concert Visiting Artist's Residency in Michigan, and collaborations with multi-instrumentalist and composer Mark O’Connor.

David has composed or improvised music for eighteen professional New York theater productions, arranged and recorded violin solos for PBS television’s Frontier House miniseries, and transmogrified dozens of Texas swing and jazz standards as the violinist of The Doc Wallace Trio, which is currently on the tour roster of the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education. Recently fulfilled commissions include chamber works for inner-city children, a sextet and septet for the New York Philharmonic, and an electronic work for the Juilliard School’s Centennial celebrations. He has received three ASCAPLUS awards in recognition of his compositions’ many performances in schools, churches, and unconventional venues, and received a grant from the American Music Center to assist in the premiere performance of A William Blake Rhapsody at New York’s 92nd Street Y.

As a Teaching Artist in the New York Philharmonic’s radical Very Young Composers Program, David serves as “scribe and cheerleader” for ‘ordinary’ 3rd through 5th graders who compose original works for New York Philharmonic musicians. Additionally, David holds multi-year residencies through the Philharmonic’s School Partnership Program, in which classes compose and perform works ranging from plastic recorder blues rhapsodies to Baroque concerti grossi. In 2002, David’s numerous creative contributions were honored with the first annual $10,000 McGraw-Hill Companies’ Robert Sherman Award for Music Education and Community Outreach, presented to musicians who have distinguished themselves as artists and educators. His recent book from McGraw-Hill, Reaching Out: A Musician’s Guide to Interactive Performance, empowers musicians to apply ear-opening aesthetic education techniques in concert settings.
