MOLA (Major Orchestra Librarians’ Association) Conference Agenda, 2009
The last time that the National Symphony hosted a MOLA conference was in 1990, when there were only about 40 member organizations. Since Washington DC is both easily accessible and home to the Library of Congress, the NSO volunteered to host the conference again, but now MOLA has over 250 member organizations!
The “theme” for this conference was special programming. Nearly every performing organization does some type of “special” concert, whether it be an opera gala, an opening night ball, pops concerts with dramatic elements, or some other unusual format. The NSO does many types of special concerts, so we rather selfishly decided to focus on the types of challenges we have with this type of programming. As you will see in the agenda, there were several panels that gave plenary sessions, as well as individual presentations, and many breakouts sessions. In addition to having over 55 presenters on the agenda, we offered two field trips: the Library of Congress (both the Jefferson and Madison buildings) and the US Marine Band Library, home of the JP Sousa archives.
It is my hope that the participants found this conference extremely practical in nature: the how, when, and what of various types of programming. I do know that as hosts we came away from the conference with a renewed appreciation for the collective wisdom and experience of this association!
