A Polyphonic Holiday Playlist!

We all have a few guilty holiday pleasures. Mine is candy cane ice cream. I have no guilt at all about loving this arrangement of Jingle Bells, though. It’s by the incomparable Tommy Newsom and performed here by Doc Severinsen and members of the Tonight Show band in a 1992 PBS special with Maureen McGovern, Mel Tormé, and my orchestra. We used to do it almost every year with Doc. It always made me want to take up saxophone, although the desire never survived for long enough to do something about it.

For many people, the holidays are tied to a wealth of memories, often revolving around family.  My family always drove up to Vermont from Connecticut to see my extended family at the holidays, and we would cram presents, suitcases, my brother, and I into our van and put on some Christmas tunes.  One of the tapes (gasp!) I remember always enjoying on those trips was the Temptations Christmas tape.
