This year’s Eastman School of Music student recipient of the annual Rochester, New York Chapter, The Links, Incorporated scholarship will present a recital at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music.
Sterling Tyler, a violist in the studio of Professor George Taylor, received the award, a cooperative effort between the Rochester, New York Chapter, The Links, Incorporated, and the Eastman School of Music, which recognizes and celebrates the extraordinary talent and academic achievement of an African-American scholar musician.
Tyler’s program includes Mozart’s Duo in G major, performed with violinist Alex Gonzalez; David Liptak’s Mellisa’s Quilt for viola and marimba, with percussionist Colin Deay; and Bill Dobbins’s Night Suite for classical guitar and viola, with Assistant Professor Petar Kodzas. Tyler’s program also includes solo presentations of Hindemith’s Trauermusik and Telemann’s Concerto for Viola.
A junior, Tyler grew up in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he began to study the viola with his mother at the age of 12. He is currently studying with Associate Professor George Taylor at the Eastman School. He has also studied with Peter Slowik and Kathryn Dey. In addition, Tyler has appeared in master classes with the Miami String Quartet and Matthew Michelic. He currently performs with the Eastman Philharmonia and Eastman Outreach Orchestra and has previously appeared with the 2011 Credo Chamber Music Camp and the Eastman Symphony Orchestra.
