The second half of the show opened with the Douglas Lowry Award, named for the late dean at the Eastman School of Music. It generally goes to two area high-school seniors who are going on to study music in college, but this year the award went to three seniors: Raymond Feng and Natalie Leclair of Pittsford Sutherland and Robert Varon, who studies guitar with Bob Sneider, the Eastman professor who holds down some of the late-night sessions at the jazz fest. …
Miami’s New World Symphony Announces New Conducting Fellow

The New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida, United States has this week announced the appointment of American conductor and trumpeter Chad Goodman as its new Conducting Fellow.
A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Chad will hold the position for the 2019-2020 concert season – working directly alongside the orchestra’s Artistic Director and Founder, Maestro Michael Tilson Thomas.

Eastman grad Jeff Beal is returning to Rochester for a special performance. “He will be doing his live score to the movie ‘Biggest Little Farm,’ and it will be performed live for the first time with the Empire Film and Media Ensemble at the Eastman School of Music,” said Merkel. “That’s about 30 musicians with Jeff leading them. The film will be playing on screen as they are playing below. And we’re really excited for that one. It’s in a tiny little rehearsal space over at The Eastman School of Music, so tickets are limited. That will be Saturday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m.”
