Beal Institute to present ‘Visual Music’

The Beal Institute, under the direction of Mark Watters, will present “Visual Music: An Evening of World-Premiere Film and Music Collaborations” at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 17 in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music, 26 Gibbs St., Rochester.
The free program will include compositions from Eastman’s contemporary media and film scoring department, performed live-to-picture by the 40-piece Empire Film and Media Ensemble, as well as music by Jeff Beal and Ray Wright.
These compositions represent visual music, and showcase films from Rochester Institute of Technology student filmmakers, classic silent films and video games.

Cheung is from the San Francisco Bay Area. He has degrees from Stanford University and the Eastman School of Music. He’s performing throughout the country as he pursues a doctorate at Eastman under the tutelage of Natalya Antonova. He’s won a number of awards, including second place in the Lewisville Lake Symphony 2018 International Piano Competition. …
Eastman benefit concert set for Jan. 13

A benefit concert on Jan. 13 will feature tenor Jonathan Rhodes and other William Warfield Scholarship recipients at 4 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music, 26 Gibbs St., Rochester.
The program will feature performances by Rhodes, vocalist/dancer Thomas Warfield with violist Joseph Hagen and pianist Jade Fung, FuturPointe Dance, the Male Chorus from Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, flautist Jashanti Henry, and guest vocalists Marcus Jefferson, Alexis Peart and Travon Walker.

“Create a Symphony” hopes to inspire and motivate

While he was a child learning to play the trumpet, it was “Star Wars” and the John Williams score that launched Herb Smith at light speed into the realm of instrumental music, later focusing on classical. He’s now a Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra trumpeter who wears many musical hats, and this month, will be debuting as a conductor with the RPO during his “Create a Symphony” concert. For Smith, it’s about introducing the genre to people who might not be familiar with it. …
In addition to playing for the RPO, Smith leads his own jazz quartet, teaches at the Eastman School of Music, and has plays with many high-profile artists.

The road from there had many swerves. He won the Shell Darwin International Guitar Competition in 1997, received the Hackett scholarship, and then received funding for Fulbright to pursue masters and doctoral studies in the prestigious Eastman School of Music in New York.
Jonathan, who has a Masters in Guitar and Doctorate of Musical Arts from Eastman, said he tried to gain as much work experience before coming back and getting employed by WAAPA. He now supervises postgraduate students’ research in the artistic and historical specialty of guitars. (Also reported by The Canberra Times)
