European trip inspires jazz concert at Eastman Theatre

Musician and composer Daniel Ziemann is using his experience visiting several countries this past year to fuel a new concert in Rochester.
It’s appropriately titled Jazz Inspired: A Year in Europe.
Ziemann rubbed elbows with the likes of jazz superstars like saxophonist Joshua Redman while overseas.
The Eastman Chamber Jazz concert takes place Monday, October 8th at 7:30 pm in Kilbourn Hall at Eastman Theatre.
Straight up at Eastman: Pink Martini

Eastman School of Music’s 2018-19 Eastman Presents Series begins this weekend with Pink Martini.
The group consists of front man Thomas Lauderdale on piano, China Forbes on vocals and a dozen other musicians. The group performs in more than 25 languages and with symphony orchestras around the world in places like Turkey, Northern Africa, Europe, New Zealand and more.
“Our 18/19 season offers something for everyone,” says Mike Stefiuk, director of concert activities at Eastman. “From one of America’s greatest violinists, to a quintet that has put brass music on the map. From a symphonic celebration of groundbreaking cartoons, to a sensational showcase for Cuba’s most prodigious musicians. On Monday evening, Oct. 1, in the UI School of Music Auditorium, a recital of viola and piano music was given by UI Professor Rudolph Haken and guest artist David Temperley.
Haken has been a familiar figure on the local music scene since his childhood. Temperley, son of UI Professor Nicholas Temperley, teaches music theory at the famous Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. The five works performed ranged from Haken pieces written when he was 15 and 20 to a world premiere of Temperley’s 2015 Sonata for Viola and Piano.

Beiliang Zhu, a doctoral student at the Eastman School of Music and a rising star in the early music world, joins Publick Musick this week for the group’s opening concert of the season, “Cello-bration!”

Lykins spent a year at DePaul University in Chicago, majoring in cello performance. He then transferred to Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in cello performance in 2009, and his master’s degree in cello performance and literature in 2011.
After he completed his undergraduate degree in 2009, Lykins returned home to Brainerd. He talked four of his musician friends from Eastman School of Music to spend the summer here, too, to earn money, but he had another idea—to start a series of concerts. …

The season will close with Alexander Kobrin (May 3, 7:30 p.m.), the 2005 gold medalists at the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Often characterized as the “Van Cliburn of today,” he recently joined the faculty of the renowned Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.
Oswego Opera Theater To Present Die Fledermaus

The Oswego production has a stellar cast, featuring professional singers with extensive musical backgrounds and experiences, having performed major roles in opera companies in New York City, Central New York, and well beyond.
Kate Hannigan, mezzo soprano, portrays Prince Orlofsky, the host of the party. Her impressive credentials include leading roles in the Buffalo Opera Unlimited, Finger Lakes Opera, Rochester Lyric Opera, Opera on the Avalon, Eastman Opera, SUNY Purchase Opera, and Nazareth Opera. She was the recipient of the Vocal Concerto Competition Prize at the Eastman School of Music and winner of the Civic Morning Madrigal Award in Syracuse, New York.
Laura Corina Sanders, who plays Adele, the Maid, is a rising young soprano, originally from San Francisco, but who now resides in New York City. While studying at the Eastman School of Music, she was featured in major roles in several of their Opera Theater productions. Last April she was one of the prize winners of the Lotte Lenya Competition.
