What is the future of classical music in America? The Eastman School of Music is hosting three guest scholars this weekend who will help answer that question. They’ll join us in studio for a preview of their presentations about teaching classical music in the digital age and the challenges future music leaders will face. Our guests:
•Robert Winter, distinguished professor of music at UCLA
•Robert Freeman, pianist, author, former director of the Eastman School of Music and the New England Conservatory, and former dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin

Former Eastman School of Music director Robert Freeman, musicologist Robert Winter and Paul Judy, founder of Eastman’s Paul R. Judy Center for Innovation and Research, will visit the campus this weekend for public lectures and panels. From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. today Winter will present on “Teaching in a Truly Digital Age,” followed by a Q&A session. From 10 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday the three along with other Eastman faculty will present “The Future of Classical Music in America.” Both presentations are in Hatch Recital Hall.
Rochester Fringe Goes ‘Instrumental’

Dave Chisholm has a knack for writing and illustrating comics and a gift for making music. Last year, he released the graphic novel Instrumental along with an accompanying soundtrack that he composed. The multi-instrumentalist has a doctorate degree from Eastman School of Music, and not only wrote all the parts for the ensemble, but also performs on the trumpet himself. The members of the band also represent the characters in the graphic novel, who are also in a band. The story line centers around the moral dilemma faced by a musician who is gifted a killer trumpet. Yes, the instrument literally kills listeners. …

When Megan Loomis walks out on stage for her one-woman show, “The Girl in the Band,” she doesn’t appear to be, well, a girl. Dressed in coveralls and a flat brim cap and affecting a “boy voice,” Loomis begins the show by quoting many of the misogynistic things her bandmates have said to her over the years. Percussion: The art of hitting things
This was music for mature audiences, only. The Eastman Percussion Ensemble, 17 Eastman School of Music students, laid a serious beatdown on inanimate objects in Sproull Atrium, at Max of Eastman Place.

Saved from the woodpile, John Dickinson High School’s two working theater organs are still in action with annual shows and productions … The Dickinson Theater Organ Society’s annual shows attract audiences from throughout the region and talent from across the globe, according to theater manager Carl Black.
