When the diva Renée Fleming traded opera for Broadway to appear as Cousin Nettie in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” she confessed to some insecurities. … She needn’t have worried: She was nominated for a Tony for best featured actress in a musical, part of the juggernaut of “Carousel” nominations.

John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble’s “All Can Work” was released back in January, but it’s still hard to pin down. Conducted by JC Sanford, the music isn’t exactly jazz, and it’s not quite contemporary classical; abstract elements of world music are nearly impossible to trace back to a single source. Genre labels do no good here.
The title track finds Eastman School of Music alumnus, percussionist, and composer Hollenbeck building a monolithic sound sculpture from the ground up, layer by layer. …
Album review: ‘Strange Paradise”

Tigue’s second album, “Strange Paradise,” released on April 27, finds the trio of percussionists (and Eastman School of Music alums) skewing ever more toward the ambient and drone tendencies that were prevalent on its debut, “Peaks.” The brilliance in Tigue’s music comes from the band’s ability to cultivate and sustain rhythmic interest amid Minimalist melodies and static harmonies. In other words: Tigue knows how to groove.
