Following the triumphant premiere of the opera “Don’t Blame Anyone” last fall, composer and Eastman School of Music professor Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon and soprano Tony Arnold will reunite for the debut performance of “Songtree for Soprano and Chamber Ensemble.” Once again, Zohn-Muldoon utilizes the poetry of contemporary Mexican writer Raúl Aceves — this time, juxtaposing it with a trio of Shakespeare sonnets. The composer’s highly engaging style melds avant-garde sensibilities with subtle and idiosyncratic lyricism. In bringing “Songtree” to life, there is no better contemporary classical vocalist for the task than Arnold. Tim Weiss will conduct.

‘Rainforest IV’ performance gives voice to objects at MAG

Prior to installing the altered junk objects that make up “Rainforest IV” in the MAG’s newly renovated Grand Gallery, the collaborators — which include the MAG’s Andrew Cappetta, composers affiliated with Eastman School of Music, members of the department of audio engineering, a percussionist, and an artist — crowded in the MAG’s Creative Workshop to tinker and talk about their work.
The team — which was led by Oliver Schneller of Eastman Audio Research Studio and University of Rochester Associate Professor of Art Allen Topolski — created dozens of instruments from scrap metal donated by local recycling facility Metalico. Other objects were brought to the table by Topolski, who creates sculptural work.

Merriweather went on to earn a bachelor of music in music education from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in choral conducting, and voice performance and literature at Eastman School of Music. He holds a doctor of musical arts in conducting from the Manhattan School of Music.

Georgia Straight Jazz Society’s live jazz season continues this Thursday with a Victoria-based small group: a duo which includes a polished and charming vocalist who will steal your heart, Edie Dapont. … she will be accompanied by the wonderful Joey Smith on bass, to present her two-hour treat.
Smith originally moved from the deep south to Rochester, N.Y. to study for his masters degree at the Eastman School of Music after touring for two-and-a-half-years with the Glenn Miller Orchestra as bassist and arranger.
