Concert to honor William Warfield’s legacy

William Warfield was one of the Eastman School of Music’s most gifted graduates and inspirational performers who with his bass-baritone voice gave African-Americans a greater presence in concert halls and film. On Sunday, William Warfield: A Legacy in Music — an annual concert to commemorate his legacy and raise money for a scholarship fund in his name — will be held in the Eastman School’s Kilbourn Hall, beginning at 4 p.m.
“He was one of the great voices of our time,” said MacClurg Vivian, president of the board of the William Warfield Scholarship Fund.
The concert will include performances by this year’s scholarship recipient, Alicia Rosser, a 21-year-old Eastman School senior who has appeared in opera productions and placed first in competitions. She has been the recipient of this award for the past two school years as well. (Also reported by WROC TV )

The Northern Neck Orchestra (NNO) recently elected Robert Hood of Merry Point, Cary Schneider of Irvington and Joseph Warren of White Stone to its board of directors.
After a 22-year absence, the Warrens returned to their home state where they now live … The youngest of their four children, George, lives with them on an occasional basis as he completes his senior year at the Eastman School of Music.

Tribute to honor longtime Eastman faculty member

Longtime Eastman School of Music faculty member Frederick Sturm is slated to be honored in a tribute concert organized by two local high school band directors.
Sturm, an Eastman alumnus who served on the faculty from 1991 to 2002, headed the school’s Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media Department, directed the Jazz Ensemble and the Studio Orchestra. He died in August 2014 following a long battle with cancer.

A young man began playing holiday music in the central hallway of the busy East Brook Mall … In total, shoppers were treated to approximately half an hour of holiday music, in a flash mob-style Christmas concert, organized by current and former participants in the AHM Summer Youth Theater Program.
Hebron resident Chris Ambrose has served as the mall Santa for several years now. Ambrose said that he felt the area could use some extra holiday joy after a contentious presidential election.
