Harp Duo Lilac 94 to Perform Live on HQR’s Midday Interview With Gina Gambony

Lilac 94 is a harp duo dedicated to performing new and creative music. Harpists Christina Brier and Kate Sloat have played their music in all kinds of venues, from schools and retirement homes to Eastman School of Music’s Hatch Hall and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Christina and Kate began playing together in their first semester as masters students at the Eastman School of Music, and formed Lilac 94 just before their graduation in 2013. They chose their name to reflect their origins in Rochester, New York – the lilac is the flower of the city, and they have a total of 94 strings between their two harps.

Fast-forward to 2009 and the world premiere of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Pops concert “A Night at the Cotton Club,” directed by Jeff Tyzik. Trumpeter Byron Stripling played the part of Louis Armstrong, Carmen Bradford sang in the style of Ella Fitzgerald, Ted Louis Levy sang and tap-danced — and the show brought the house down
Tyzik and Stripling, friends for 37 years now, were in Chicago O’Hare together. “We’re always in airports,” Stripling said. “And there’s nothing to do but think creatively.”
The two trumpet players, who had been Eastman School of Music classmates, were discussing all sorts of things when the Cotton Club came up. …
Also joining the show are local pianist John Nyerges, RPO bassist and Eastman faculty member Jeff Campbell on bass, and guest drummer Robert Breithaupt, whom Stripling praises for having a diverse skill set from his experience as a classical and jazz percussionist.

Yakima Trombonist Takes Final Bow After 45 Years

Trombonist Roger Finch performed in his final concert with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra (YSO) earlier this month after 45 years.
Music teacher Dick Schacter further influenced him throughout grade school. “He was just an excellent musician,” Finch said. “He held high standards for the band and had a masters from the Eastman School of Music.”
