Local audiences have long been able to hear great performances from established pianists who collaborate with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in concert. Now in its 14th iteration, the Eastman Young Artists International Piano Competition also gives classical music fans the chance to witness emergent pianists from throughout the world. Tonight, July 6, SubCulture will continue its new concert series, curated by the renowned Tony Award-winning composer, lyricist, conductor, and director, Jason Robert Brown.
Jason studied composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., with Samuel Adler, Christopher Rouse, and Joseph Schwantner. He lives with his wife, composer Georgia Stitt, and their daughters in New York City.

Bassist Gordy Johnson graduated from the Eastman School of Music where he majored in flute. As a bassist, he toured with Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen, and the Paul Winter Consort, has appeared on over 50 recordings, and has kept time for most local and many visiting artists. He has released five albums (so far!) featuring trios with different combinations of pianists and drummers (Trios, Volumes 1, 2 and 3.0; GJ4; Trios No.5).

First up is musical theatre, August 3-7, with teaching artists Sarah Whelan and David Gleichman. Next is choir, back for a second year, August 10-14, with Nell Hoban and David Gleichman.
Baritone David Gleichman, a 2011 Conestoga graduate, is a vocal performance major at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. David made his Carnegie Hall debut in Merry Mount–performing the role of Second Puritan–in the RPO’s Carnegie Hall “Spring for Music” Festival. This past May, David spent a week with the Houston Grand Opera in their Young Artist’s Vocal Academy.
Noontune Concert Features Organ Music

Church of the Messiah’s Noontune concert at 12:15 PM on Wednesday, July 15, will feature an organ program performed by Julian N. Petrallia. The program will last about 45 minutes, and the church will offer box lunches for sale following the program for anyone who is interested.
In the fall, Mr. Petrallia will attend the Eastman School of Music, where he will study organ performance and sacred music.

North Adams native and accomplished trumpeter Steven Felix, is serving as a soloist this month with the Eagles Band.
A 2007 graduate of Drury High School, and the son of Charles and Gloria Felix of North Adams, Felix currently resides in Rochester, N.Y. where he is a first-year doctoral student at the renowned Eastman School of Music. He received his master’s degree in trumpet performance from the Eastman School of Music, and a bachelor’s degree in trumpet performance and music education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
JAZZ | Dariusz Terefenko and Alexa Tarantino

Pianist Dariusz Terefenko is a professor at the Eastman School of Music; saxophonist Alexa Tarantino is an Eastman graduate. Over Tarantino’s years at the school the two formed a musical bond that resulted in a wonderful album, “Crossing Paths.” Terefenko is known for his breathtaking dexterity at the piano. Tarantino’s reputation for adventurous solos led to an appearance with Earth, Wind Fire at the 2014 Jazz Festival. At Kilbourn they will play standards and originals from their album.
BCU professor presents Carnegie Hall Concert

Others may respond to the query, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” with “Practice, practice, practice!” Dr. Richard Steinbach of Sioux City points to playing the organ for Mass while in grade school.
Steinbach started a contemporary vocal/guitar ensemble to lead the music at liturgies during his high school years. He was awarded degrees in piano performance from the University of Colorado, the Eastman School of Music and the doctorate of musical arts from the University of Iowa.
