How Lucas Meachem “Met’ the Challenge
(The Pilot 04/21/2015)

Yet on Saturday, the 1996 graduate of Union Pines High School will take a victory lap when he sings Silvio, a lead role in “Pagliacci,” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The performance, part of “The Met: Live in HD,” is broadcast simultaneously from the Met stage across the United States, including the Sunrise Theater where Meachem’s booming baritone promises to thrill friends who remember him as a soccer, baseball, football and basketball player.
After Appalachian State, Meachem auditioned for the prestigious Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. “I sang for them and just like that, they gave me a scholarship,” he says. “I realized that if people wanted me I must be good at this. Irondequoit United Church of Christ to present Scholar Cantorum May 2
(Greece Post 04/22/2015)
I closed my eyes and thought I had died and gone to Heaven! That is often the reaction people have the first time they hear the transcendent music of Christ Church’s Schola Cantorum. People of all ages have been making “Compline”, a short sung liturgy Sunday nights at 9 p.m. at Christ Church, East Ave., a part of their weekly routine.
Stephen Kennedy, Director of Music and Organist of Christ Church, started the Schola Cantorum as a way of reaching out to the community with the ancient tradition of Gregorian Chant and Renaissance Motets. In 2006, Kennedy began teaching a course in sacred music skills at The Eastman School of Music and The Schola Cantorum, or “Academic Choir”, was born.
