Jazz trumpeter Stripling will swing with the symphony

When trumpeter Byron Stripling takes the stage at Powell Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 30 to lead the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra through “Gospel According to Swing,” he will be returning to a city and an orchestra that helped make him the musician he is today.
Stripling, who is artistic director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and a world-traveling soloist, got his start in the industry thanks to a St. Louis trumpeter, Clark Terry. Stripling was a student at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, when Terry offered him a job playing trumpet on tour.
Rohan Krishnamurthy Percussion Trio to perform at Kalamazoo College

The critically acclaimed Indian percussionist and entrepreneur, Rohan Krishnamurthy, will perform in the Rohan Krishnamurthy Percussion Trio in the Dalton Recital Hall of Kalamazoo College, Wednesday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. He recently completed his doctorate in musicology at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in New York.

In a recital ranging from the 17th century to the 20th, playing entirely from memory, organist Nathan Laube displayed apparently effortless virtuosity, great flair and a fine ear for sonority.
Still in his mid-20s, already on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., Laube is widely considered one of the most brilliant younger American organists. Closing the church’s 2013-14 Music at Incarnation series, he certainly vindicated that reputation.

The Music Institute of Chicago celebrates the 100th anniversary of its E.M. Skinner organ by presenting acclaimed young organist Nathan J. Laube in concert tonight, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall.
In addition to his busy performing schedule, Laube is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of young organists, and in the fall of 2013, he joined the faculty at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York as assistant professor of organ.
Annual Patriotic Organ Concert Set For July 1

The 8th annual Patriotic Organ Concert sponsored by the Chattanooga Music Club will be presented at Chattanooga’s Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday, July 1, at 7 p.m.
The program will feature internationally known organist Frederick Hohman, performing on the auditorium’s Austin Pipe Organ. He studied organ with David Craighead at Rochester’s Eastman School of Music, where he earned Eastman’s Performer’s Certificate, Bachelor and Master of Music degrees and DMA degrees in Performance and Literature.

The soloist was hometown favorite Matthew Zalkind, an up-and-coming cellist whose parents, trombonist Larry and violist Roberta, are longtime members of the orchestra. (Larry Zalkind will be taking a leave of absence next season, having accepted a teaching position at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.)
Eugene Feygelson and Bobby Mitchell to perform

Milford-grown violinist/composer Eugene Feygelson and pianist Bobby Mitchell, just back from a triumphal appearance in Vienna, will perform at the Hawley Silk Mill in Hawley, Pa., on Friday, May 16 at 8 p.m., and at the Milford Theatre in Milford, Pa., on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m.
Both Feygelson and Mitchell are graduates of the prestigious Eastman School of Music, in Rochester, NY, where they first met. Among other accomplishments, they have gone on to become founding members of the improvisation-based i=u Festival, currently held in London and New York (www.iequalsufestival.com).
Hamra facilitates art donation worth more than $700,000

Springfield businessman Sam Hamra helped bring about the donation of 60 paintings valued at $710,200 to the Springfield Art Museum and colleges and universities, including four in Springfield.
Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., will receive 10 paintings valued at $97,100, and Ohio Wesleyan University will receive seven paintings valued at $92,500. (Also reported by The Houston Chronicle)

Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s second to last Philharmonics series concert this season is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Saturday at Eastman Theatre, 60 Gibbs St. It features Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, considered by many his best work.
Eastman at St. Michael’s Series continues with organist and Eastman School of Music alumnus Keith Reas who plays at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
