Maria Schneider: Going Her Own Way
(All About Jazz © 04/03/2014)
Schneider learned from the best. She honed her composing, arranging, and band leading skills at the University of Minnesota, the University of Miami, and The Eastman School of Music, and then worked closely with Gil Evans and studied intensively with Bob Brookmeyer. But she wasn’t satisfied to become a disciple of her mentors. Instead, in 1992, she formed her own big band, which for over two decades has incorporated her own unique style while giving full expression to the cutting edge musicians in the group.

(Democrat & Chronicle 04/05/2014)
In a taut, new production of Francis Poulenc’s “Dialogues of the Carmelites” — an opera last performed by Eastman Opera Theatre in 2004 — the cast and orchestra alike shone Friday night in a performance that rivaled that of many professional American companies.

His résumé gained some measure of permanence with a 1922 trip to New York City, where he was to conduct the premiere of his North and West, Op. 22Eastman School of Music two years earlier. They wanted to make it a premier destination for music students.
The 27-year-old Hanson was offered the dean’s job in April 1924. He accepted. And stayed for 40 years. And Eastman and Rhees got their premier music school.

In March WXXI and Eastman School of Music brought NPR’s From the Top radio show to town to record an episode for the series. If you’re not familiar with From the Top, it’s a weekly radio show–heard on Classical 91.5 Sundays at 5 p.m.–that features stories and musical performances by amazing young classical musicians, between the ages of 8 and 18.
Eastman School of Music’s soprano Emily Helenbrook also took to the stage to sing “Adele’s Laughing Song” from Die Fledermaus. This was actually Emily’s second time performing on From the Top. Yes, she’s that good! An ensemble of young musicians from the Eastman School of Music and Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (RPYO) also performed with world-renown flautist Sir James Galway.

Webster tops in music again
(Rochester Democrat & Chronicle © 03/30/2014)
An event I attended Friday night is a very good example of why Webster is one of the best. The concert, at Plank Road North Elementary School, was called “Music in Our School Showcase,” and featured more than 20 young singers, pianists, trumpeters, flute players and string players performing solo and in small groups.
The students were all Plank Road North students who take private music lessons. It was the brainchild of Eastman School of Music instructor Tamari Hill, who wanted to give students another opportunity to perform outside of their private studios.
