Pianist Leon Fleisher Will Share His Talent at Eastman School of Music

Eastman School of Music students this week will have a rare opportunity to work with one of the masters. Pianist Leon Fleisher, who is a 2007 Kennedy Center Honor recipient, will be conducting classes and also will perform Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F Minor in a sold-out Kilbourn Hall concert at 3 p.m. February 23 with the Ying Quartet.

New Jersey jazz guitarist Vic Juris is joined by Eastman School of Music students Jacob Dupre on piano, Emiliano Lasansky on bass and Eric Metzgar on drums for two shows, 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday at the school’s Sproull Atrium in Miller Center, which shares an entrance with Max of Eastman Place on Gibbs Street. The shows, part of the school’s Jazz Café series, will also see Eastman students joining trombonist Jim Pugh at 10 p.m. March 21 and saxophonist Jimmy Greene at 10 p.m. April 11.
PInkerton Academy hosts festival of jazz

COMPOSER PORTRAITS:
Brad Lubman, conductor/composer, is founding co-Artistic Director and Music Director of Ensemble Signal. He has gained widespread recognition during the past two decades for his versatility, commanding technique, and insightful interpretations. Lubman is Associate Professor of Conducting and Ensembles at the Eastman School of Music, where he has directed the Musica Nova ensemble since joining the faculty in 1997, and on the faculty of the Bang-on-a-Can Summer Institute.
College notebook: Swimmer Chris Doser a triple threat

While attending Penfield High, Chris Doser found himself drawn to three areas: music, swimming and math. So he asked himself: Why not pursue all three?
Now a senior at the University of Rochester, Doser carries a 3.65 grade-point average as a triple major in applied math, saxophone performance and music education. He’s also a member of the UR swim team and will compete this week in the UAA Championships at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. He’ll race in the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyles and on the 200, 400 and 800 free relays.

Hundreds of contemporary classical compositions
McCarthy has composed hundreds of serious pieces for symphony orchestra, symphonic band, and chamber groups.
“Rimbasly,” an early composition for marimba and synthesizer, commissioned in 1989 by one of the world’s leading percussion soloists, Michael Burritt of the Eastman School of Music, still sells about a hundred copies a year.
Feb. 14: Opera Star Renee Fleming is born

The daughter of two music teachers, Fleming grew up in Churchville (a graduate of Churchville-Chili High School) and earned her bachelor’s degree from the Crane School of Music at the state University of New York at Potsdam. She earned a Master’s Degree at the Eastman School of Music here in Rochester.
Medieval music complement medieval art

“Echoes of the Middle Ages,” scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Gallery’s Fountain Court, features a selection of medieval songs that have been recorded to complement the gallery’s collections through its web site, on its new mobile app, MAGart, and on an interactive kiosk in the medieval gallery. The music, along with commentary, will also reside on the Eastman School of Music’s web site.
