BIOGRAPHY
BA, University of California-Berkeley. Studied with Philip Burton, William Primrose, George Neikrug, Renzo Sabatini, the Griller Quartet, and in master class with Pablo Casals. Former member, Beaux-Arts Quartet, Galimir String Quartet, and Speculum Musicae. Guest artist with Juilliard Quartet, Guarnieri Quartet, Mendelssohn Quartet, Ying Quartet, Tokyo Quartet, American Quartet, Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, and Francesco Trio. New York City recitals at Carnegie Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Merkin Hall. European premiere of Joseph Druckman’s Viola Concerto with the Berlin Radio Orchestra. Soloist with the Central Philharmonic, Beijing; Orchestre Colonne, Paris; Bamberg Symphony; Dutch Radio Philharmonic; Chicago String Ensemble; and Aspen Festival Orchestra. Solo recordings: 3-CD series, Music for the Viola. Ensemble recordings: Mozart quintets, as guest with the Juilliard Quartet on CBS, as violist of Galamir Quartet on Vanguard, and as member of Speculum Musicae on CBS, CRI, Nonesuch, and Bridge. Current participant in the Aspen Festival; participant in the Marlboro Music Festival, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Kneisel Hall, Victoria International Festival, Musicorda, and the Eastman Seminar in Hamamatsu, Japan. Taught at SUNY-Potsdam (1967-70), SUNY-Stony Brook (1972-89), Mannes (1979-89), Kneisel Hall, Blue Hill, ME (1979-81), SUNY-Purchase (1980-82), Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing (1981, 1983, 2001) Shanghai Conservatory of Music (1981, 2001), Aspen Music School (1987-89 and 2001-), Kunitachi College of Music (1999), Kumho Winter Seminar, Korea (2000), Eastman (1989-). Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching (2004).
