Jesse Freedman is an ethnomusicologist whose work focuses on the histories and legacies of the Latin American political song movement nueva canción (new song) in the former German Democratic Republic. He received his PhD from the University of California, Riverside as well as degrees in classical guitar performance from the University of Southern California (MM) and Guilford College (BM). Before coming to Eastman in 2024, Jesse was a Visiting Assistant Professor at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA and had also taught courses at UCR and Caldwell University in New Jersey. He has published in Crossings: Journal of Migration and Culture, Yearbook for Traditional Music, Music and Politics, and Latin American Perspectives. His recent publications explore relationships between sound and space in post-reunification Germany. Jesse’s work has been funded by a Fulbright IIE fellowship and twice by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
