M. David Shemancik
David Shemancik is a recently retired music educator, having taught instrumental music for 40 years! After earning his undergraduate degree from the Eastman School of Music, his career began in the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill schools in central New York. From there he relocated to the Rochester area and taught in the Pittsford schools for 30 years. He has taught middle and high school bands, AP music theory, and worked with jazz bands and pit orchestras for musicals. In the Pittsford Schools he served as Standards Leader for Music for six years. In his career he has served NYSSMA in various roles, including All-State Band Chair, and as an adjudicator for solo festivals. He has also guest conducted junior and senior high all county bands across the state. Mr. Shemancik served as a conductor with the American Music Abroad tour of Europe on eight of their tours. In 2016 he was named the RPO music educator of the year for instrumental music. In 2004 he was selected to represent NY state as one of 200 American teachers who went on an educational/cultural exchange with Japanese educators through a Fulbright Memorial Award. He served as the interim conductor of the Kodak Band while they searched for a permanent director. Mr. Shemancik is a freelance woodwind player in several local ensembles including the Krazy Firemen Oktoberfest Band, Flower City Society Orchestra, Center Stage Pops Orchestra, and the Greater Rochester Music Educator’s Wind Band. He has been to numerous cities and to Italy performing in chamber orchestras that accompany silent films in live performances.
