This is a yearlong course divided into two semesters.

The Eastman School’s new Klezmer Ensemble celebrates the rich musical traditions of Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe and promotes the joy and comradery of performing Klezmer music together with others. The repertoire includes traditional Klezmer tunes in the Hebraic modes, songs for Jewish holidays such as Chanukah and Passover, and contemporary Klezmer music inspired by other popular styles. Working from lead sheets, members will expand their improvisation skills and collaborate to build chords, bass lines, and rhythmic motifs.

The ensemble will perform throughout the year at Eastman School concerts, as well as outreach performances at local synagogues and senior living communities. Instrumentalists who read music and perform on an orchestral instrument (including piano and guitar) at the NYSSMA Grade IV level or higher are welcome to join the ensemble.
