How much do you know about traditional Korean music? If your answer is nothing, everything, or anything in between, you are in luck. Renowned daegum flutist Jang Hyun Won is in residence at the Eastman School today, September 18.
The daegum is a traditional Korean wooden flute,made from bamboo, widely used in folk music, film scores, court music, and contemporary classical music.Won is considered one of the Grand Masters of the daegum flute, having devoted his life to promoting the traditional music of Korea. He has won grand prizes in numerous competitions and has been the principal deagum player in the National Traditional Instrument Orchestra of Korea.
Won will give a class this afternoon from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Ciminelli Formal Lounge in the Eastman Student Living Center, 100 Gibbs Street. Won will also perform a solo recital at 7 p.m. in Room One of Messinger Hall, 10 Gibbs Street.
This event, sponsored by Eastman School of Music and the Eastman Community Music School, is free and open to the public.
