A supervised work experience (Internship) can provide a valuable educational experience that augments the regular academic program of students. Internships provide students with opportunities to establish professional networks, and they often lead to offers of employment after graduation. The Eastman School of Music provides students to enroll for unpaid internships, with either credit or no-credit options.
Eastman Initiatives Curriculum (EIC) 394: academic year, credit/no credit
Academic Year Internship: EIC 394 (1-3 credits)
Guidelines for earning academic credit: Students may earn from 1 to 3 academic credits for unpaid internships in both for-profit and non-profit sectors. To earn credit, the internship must combine an academic component with direct work experience. The student must register for an Independent Study during the specific term in which the internship will take place.
Supervision: A full-time member of the Eastman faculty must agree to sponsor the academic portion that complements the direct work experience. The exact nature of the academic portion is determined by mutual agreement between the student intern and the faculty sponsor. The direct work experience portion is supervised by the staff where the internship takes place, and should be no more than 5-15 hours per week, proportional to the number of enrolled credits [1 credit = 5-8 hours; 2 credits = 9-11 hours; 3 credits = 12-15 hours].
Approval and registration procedures:
- To begin the approval and registration process for the internship course (EIC 394), the student must submit a completed Independent Study Form, signed by the faculty sponsor, to the Office of Academic Affairs.
- Internships also require approval from the Professional Development Committee. The application to the PDC consists of the following additional documents:
- A more detailed description of the proposed internship, elaborating upon the summary description on the Independent Study Form, in the form of a letter submitted by the student. This should include a statement about how the internship connects to the current major and future career plans.
- A letter from the faculty sponsor outlining his or her expectations for the academic component of the internship and criteria for evaluation.
- Documentation from the host organization in the form of a letter or e-mail, indicating the nature of the work, the approximate number of hours of work per week, and the name and contact information of the direct supervisor.
- Statement of support from the studio teacher or academic advisor.
- The deadlines for the complete submission of materials to the Academic Affairs Office for review by the Professional Development Committee are April 15 (for a fall semester internship) and November 15 (for a spring semester internship.)
Course requirements and grading: The faculty sponsor defines the course requirements and grading procedures of the internship course. Internship courses normally involve outside reading and a research paper or critical journal as the basis for evaluation. The readings for the internship are tailored to the particular needs of the internship, and the faculty sponsor of the internship determines the amount and specific content of the reading. Internships are graded on the “Pass/Fail” grading system. The evaluation is based upon the student’s performance on the reading and written work, including reflections on the internship, and may also include consultation with the supervisory personnel at the internship site. EIC 394: Academic Year Internship may be used as “Practical & Creative Musicianship” elective credit. EIC 394: Academic Year Internship may not be used as Humanities & Science elective credit.
